Reminders of Home – Emma + Tim’s Intimate Elopement in Old Town Alexandria
When I met Emma and Tim for the first time for their November elopement, it truly felt like meeting up with two old friends. Emma spotted me from down the sidewalk and enthusiastically called out “we made it!!” before giving me a big hug. She and Tim had just driven into Old Town from a courthouse ceremony in Maryland. They were now legally married, completely giddy, and radiating the kind of joy that makes strangers on the street stop and smile. Which, as it turns out, is exactly what happened.
During our planning call, Emma expressed to me that Old Town, with its cobblestone streets and historic charm, reminded her of her hometown in England. As a tribute to her roots, we started our session amongst the cobblestone streets of Wales Alley and Captain’s Row. It felt less like a photo session and more like a stroll through a neighborhood that felt like home.

With Emma clad in a leather jacket stamped with “Just Married” across the back, we continued on to King Street. The couple was greeted with congratulations from so many friendly strangers as we made our way to the Alexandria Courthouse. With its sweeping arches and classic architecture, this was the perfect backdrop for some fun detail photos. Emma and Tim also completely nailed it with the most perfect, romantic dip kiss (proof below if you don’t believe me).

After the courthouse, we headed toward the waterfront for sunset portraits. On our way to the water, Emma and Tim stopped to listen to a street performer and shared a spontaneous first dance in the middle of King Street. I couldn’t tell you what song was playing, but it was the perfect, unscripted type of moment that is so unique to elopements.

Every couple I photography teaches me something new about life and love.
Emma and Tim reminded me that the best relationships don’t feel like an arrival at something new. Instead, it’s that warm, comforting, familiar feeling, like cobblestone streets in a city across the ocean that somehow still feels like coming home.
To Emma and Tim – thank you for letting me be a part of your day. It was an absolute honor.
With love,
Kelly
